Race report
Sunday 31st October – Leander Club had two development crews racing in the Upper Thames Autumn Head.
Both our crews were racing in Eights made up of athletes who are not attending GB trials in Boston, next weekend.
First up to race the 3000m upstream course into a strong headwind, was the young men’s crew of Cox Edward Peacock, Danny Mulligan, Aidan Murphy, Chris Fry, Tristan Grange, Luke Sharman, Archie Lockett, and Rory Cameron- Martin. The crew got off to a decent start but unfortunately faced some steering problems causing them to have to stop mid race. Although this was frustrating, it was still a good experience for these young athletes for them to learn from, in future races.
Next, it was the turn of our women’s crew of Cox Katy Ward, Franny Hunt- Davis, Ruth Siddorn, Michelle Traux, India Summerside, Annabell Radbourne, Claire Naughton, Emily Mcharg and Tricia Smith, who handled the difficult conditions well against some strong opposition to win their event.
Our new Assistant women’s Coach, Richard Chambers, said “racing at Upper Thames Autumn Head provided us with the ideal opportunity to start our season and to get our first win. Thank you to Upper Thames Rowing Club and all the volunteers that made the event happen”.
